Support For Windows XP SP2 To End

By Doug Caverly

Windows XP users who for some reason haven't upgraded to Service Pack 3 should probably think hard about finally taking the leap. Microsoft has announced that it will stop supporting Windows XP SP2 (along with Windows 2000) after July 13th of this year.

That means security updates will no longer be issued, which could be a major problem with spammers and malware authors growing more numerous and dangerous all the time. Support assistance will become unavailable, too, and even if you're willing to reward Microsoft for helping you, paid assistance will cease to be an option.

About the only resources that Microsoft will offer will be of the DIY variety - troubleshooting tools, FAQs, Microsoft Knowledge Base articles, and perhaps a few other scraps.

Service Pack 3 is of course free, though, so assuming that SP2 users aren't faced with some sort of strange compatibility issue, upgrading to it shouldn't be an issue. (And honestly, even people with compatibility issues still need to figure something out, since hardware dating from the SP2 era could give out sooner rather than later.)

Finally, just in case you're wondering, Microsoft hasn't given any hints that it'll discontinue support for SP3 anytime soon, which is definitely good news for XP users.
