More Evidence Of XP's Longevity

By Doug Caverly

In case anyone was wondering, you readers of WinXPDigest still appear to be part of a large crowd. XP holdouts, long expected to give in to Vista sooner or later, continue to dominate the PC landscape in professional settings.

Consider this a sort of follow-up to the Forrester Research study Mike Sachoff documented in July. While no second study has been conducted, Shane O'Neill has done some sniffing around, and anecdotal evidence points to people sticking with XP for some time yet.

O'Neill reports, "IT pros and CIOs we talked to for this story have some old concerns regarding Vista, starting with its ROI, and some new ones, such as how they'd handle a Vista upgrade for users who've now decided based on months of negative publicity that Vista's a bad choice."

The subjects admitted that Vista's not terrible, and computer hardware has (at least in some cases) caught up with Vista's requirements. It looks like XP is simply good enough that any sort of upgrade is seen as unnecessary.

At least until Windows 7 appears, anyway. This next version may pose something of a threat. Perhaps it can be seen as a rightful successor, though, as a whole lot of people will probably be wanting to get something new by the time its (supposed) early 2010 release date rolls around.
