Majority Of Businesses Still Using Windows XP

By Mike Sachoff

Less than one in 11 of the PCs being used in large or very large businesses runs Windows Vista, according to survey results by Forrester Research.

Out of 50,000 businesses surveyed by Forrester, 87.1 percent were still using Windows XP at the end of June, compared to 8.8 percent for Vista. According to author Thomas Mendel, that means the majority of PCs upgraded to Vista were those using older versions of Windows.

"Vista is new Coke," Mendel said, comparing Microsoft's operating system to the failed soft drink. Businesses still undecided about Vista would be wise, he said to "consider following the lead of Microsoft's important partner Intel and re-evaluating the case of Vista."

Vista still has double the share of Macs among large businesses. The share of Macs increased 4.5 percent in June from 3.7 percent in January 2008; 80 percent are Intel-based Macs.

Linux's share of desktops declined significantly, according to Forrester, to 0.5 percent in June from 1.8 percent in January.

Due to this business application developers only need to "develop exclusively for Windows XP and Vista. Forget about Macs unless your 're aiming at a specific business vertical where Mac use is prevalent."
